5 Things you can do to achieve more in 2018

16 Jan

With 2018 now in full swing and people coming back from their summer holidays, I have no doubt that many business owners and CEOs have used the break to consider what they would like to achieve in 2018.

While it is great to have goals, they simple are dreams without any actions.

Here are 5 things you can do so you achieve more in 2018.

        1. Make a Plan

Sorry to start off with a boring strategy but without a plan you are like a ship without a rudder. A study in US of MBA students, 10 years after they graduated, found that those had a goal but no detail plan earned 3 times more than those who had no goals at graduation.  Those who had a goal and detail plan earned 10 times more than their peer. The majority of graduated were in the goal and no plan while the goal and plan had 5% of graduates.

It is the thinking that goes into the plan that will help you achieve more in 2018.

        2. Create 4 x 12 week year.

Have you ever noticed that come mid-December people are frantic about completing some of their goals and/or tasks?  Nothing spurs on action like a deadline!

Take your goals and break them down into 12 weeks action plans.  Imagine how much more you will achieve with 4 deadlines instead of just one.

        3. Make a weekly appointment with yourself!

I fondly remember managing a staff and asked how he was going in getting his work done before the due date. He was really busy and would try and get it done. There is no such thing as try… you either do or you do not.  Most do not!

I remembered I was coming down his way and suggested he make an hour to meet with me. He quickly found an hour in his busy schedule and locked in our appointment. Once this was done, I let him know he now had an hour to finish off the few tasks and meet our deadline.

We can all get busy and making an appointment with yourself ensures you get time to complete the tasks you need to achieve your goals.

        4.Reflect to perfect

Part of continuous improvement is reviewing what has not worked, identifying why and then implementing strategies that will make future scenarios better.

One of the best actions you can take is, at the end of the day,  ask yourself the following three questions.

  1. What did I do well?
  2. What did not go according to plan and what do I need to learn from that?
  3. What is the one thing I can see progress in?

        5. Discuss you goals and progress with someone regularly

Research in the US showed that you had a 90% chance of achieving your goals when you have met with someone regularly to discuss your goals and your progress. Their work showed that a plan only was only 50% chance of success.
